How To Be The Hands And Feet Of Jesus In Your Community

A group of hands stacked in unity, each arm in a different colored sweater (red, green, blue, orange). Outdoors, conveying teamwork.

At Port of Missions, we believe that being the hands and feet of Jesus isn’t just a saying—it’s a lifestyle. It means stepping in when someone is hurting, responding when a need arises, and being present with love and compassion in every situation. Our mission is rooted in real-life service, not just words.

We often receive calls from the Red Cross when someone has experienced an unexpected tragedy. These are situations where people have lost everything—sometimes due to fire, disaster, or other emergencies. In those moments, we show up. We bring clothing, personal care items, and anything else we can to help meet immediate needs and restore a sense of dignity.

But our work doesn’t stop there. We also support individuals who are transitioning from group homes or other challenging environments. Some are looking for clothing to wear to a job interview. Others simply need a fresh set of clothes or a new pair of shoes. In many cases, we provide snack bags because some of our clients don’t have access to a stove or refrigerator in their living space. It may seem small, but a bag with ready-to-eat food can go a long way when you don’t have a kitchen.

Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of walking alongside people who were homeless and helped them get back on their feet. We’ve seen them find jobs, move into homes, and begin to rebuild. That’s what faith in action looks like—not flashy, but faithful. It’s the kind of love that shows up in the everyday moments, through small acts of kindness and consistent support.

There are a few things we run out of quickly. Men’s shoes, clothes for men, personal care items, and snacks are always in demand. These basic needs are often overlooked, yet they are the very things that help people feel human again. Churches in our community could have an incredible impact by choosing to come alongside outreach organizations and supply these essentials. Whether it’s through a donation drive, financial support, or volunteering, it’s one way to truly live out what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

The Bible is clear about our call to serve:

  • “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

  • “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” — Matthew 25:40

  • “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” — Proverbs 3:27

If you’ve been asking God how you can make a difference, this might be your answer. Start local. Ask what’s needed. Partner with organizations already serving. Your obedience can become someone else’s answered prayer.

We’ve been called to serve. And with your help, we will keep doing just that—one person at a time
