Introduction

Homelessness is more than just lacking a roof over one’s head—it affects every aspect of a person’s well-being, including their health and hygiene. Hygiene insecurity among homeless individuals is a public health issue that often goes unnoticed. Without access to showers, clean clothing, and personal care items, individuals face an increased risk of infectious diseases, social stigma, and barriers to employment. At Port of Missions Outreach, we have seen firsthand how these struggles impact lives, and we believe that small acts of kindness—like providing hygiene essentials—can make a huge difference.

How Public Health is Affected by Homelessness

Hygiene insecurity doesn’t just affect individuals experiencing homelessness—it’s a community-wide concern. Poor sanitation can lead to the spread of infectious diseases like hepatitis A, tuberculosis, and skin infections, which can affect the broader population as well. When people lack access to restrooms, showers, or clean clothing, they are more likely to suffer from:

  • Skin and respiratory infections due to unclean conditions.

  • Oral health issues that can lead to severe pain and complications.

  • Mental health struggles, as poor hygiene can lead to isolation, depression, and hopelessness.

At Port of Missions Outreach, we help people facing homelessness by providing essential needs like emergency shelter locations, clothing, bus cards, food, and personal care items. We have seen cases where someone loses everything in a house fire, leaving them without basic hygiene items. Others are living in their cars, unable to access showers or toiletries. We’ve even assisted people transitioning from group homes to apartments, ensuring they have the basic essentials to start fresh.

The Link Between Homelessness and Infectious Disease

When people are forced to live without proper hygiene, the risk of disease skyrockets. Crowded shelters, lack of sanitation, and exposure to the elements all contribute to the spread of illnesses. In many cases, something as simple as not having clean socks or underwear can lead to infections that require medical attention.

One major misconception people have about homelessness is that it’s always a choice. The truth is, every person’s story is different—some have lost jobs, escaped domestic violence, or faced medical emergencies that left them with nothing. That’s why dignity and respect should always be at the forefront of how we address homelessness.

I remember a woman living in her car who was encouraged to move in with a friend for a while. She was provided with a job, and eventually, she was able to qualify for her own place. That was a situation where, if we hadn’t treated her with dignity, she might not have received the help she truly needed. Sometimes, recognizing someone's dignity and providing the right support can completely change their future.

Solutions to Homelessness That Improve Public Health

There are many ways to help break the cycle of hygiene insecurity and improve public health for those experiencing homelessness:

  • Mobile shower programs & hygiene stations – Providing accessible places for people to wash up.

  • Hygiene kit donations – Supplying individuals with soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products.

  • Laundry services & clothing programs – Giving people access to clean clothes to improve their confidence and job prospects.

  • Affordable housing initiatives – Addressing long-term solutions that go beyond hygiene to create stability and health security.

How Port of Missions is Helping

At Port of Missions Outreach, we provide small toiletry bags with essential hygiene products to everyone who schedules an appointment with us. We receive these items through discounted purchases, donations from other organizations, and generous individual donors. If we ever receive an overflow of hygiene supplies, we share them with local shelters in Milwaukee to help reach even more people in need.

Additionally, we offer new and gently used clothing to individuals who come to us with a specific need. A clean outfit and fresh hygiene products may seem small, but they can be the first step toward restoring dignity and hope.

How You Can Help

The good news? Anyone can make a difference. Here are some ways to take action today: Donate hygiene items – Find a local shelter or outreach organization (like Port of Missions) and ask what items are most needed. Create hygiene kits – Assemble small care packages with soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, and socks. Volunteer your time – Helping to distribute supplies, organize donation drives, or simply listen to someone's story can be life-changing. Spread awareness – Educate others on the realities of homelessness and hygiene insecurity to reduce stigma.

Conclusion

Homelessness is not just about needing shelter—it’s about health, dignity, and survival. At Port of Missions Outreach, we believe that every small act of kindness matters. Hygiene insecurity is an issue we can address together, and when we step up as a community, we don’t just help individuals in need—we improve public health for everyone.

💛 Let’s see homelessness through a new lens—one of dignity, compassion, and action.
